Our Background

Salem Baby Care Centre is a community based, non-governmental organization.

The centre was started in 1991 by Ria Stanton, who began to help destitute mothers and their babies from the boot of her car, in the parking lot of a local liquor store. Salem’s first home was in the Oriental Plaza, where they occupied unused office space donated by a local businessman. Salem then moved to the NICRO building in North End, from where they operated for 6 years.

In October 1998, Salem moved into their own newly built premises. This building project was funded by Nieukoop Rotary Club (Netherlands), North Sydney Rotary Club, Mosman Rotary Club (Australia). These funds were matched by Rotary Foundation through Rotary International (USA). Bonza Bay Rotary Club assisted with the completion of the centre and to supply vitally needed equipment to furnish the centre.

The Eastern Cape is one of the poorest regions of South Africa. Unemployment is rife and the poverty of hundreds of homeless people and “shack dwellers” is devastating.
